CHEN
Chen became a doctor because it was expected of him, but now that he’s practicing, he’s not sure it was the right decision. He has solid instincts and skill, although his bedside manner could use some warmth, both inside the hospital and in his own marriage. His vivid imagination, combined with the couple’s decision to have Fitz be their sperm donor, has left him lonely, restless and ambivalent about his life. If he can find a creative outlet it might help provide the balance he’s seeking in his life.
BYRON MANN
Byron Mann is the rare actor equally commanding in the action genre as well as the dramatic genre. Best known for his Gemini-nominated performance as a gang-squad detective under fire in CBC’s Dragon Boys, Mann recently wrapped the thriller Jasmine, shot on location in Hong Kong, and produced by Stratton Leopold (Mission: Impossible 3), and is currently shooting a three-episode arc on the critically-acclaimed series, Durham County, playing a dark, underworld kingpin opposite the show’s lead, Hugh Dillon.
Mann plays ‘Chen,’ an even-tempered ER physician hiding a sea of emotions in Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures, based on the award-winning book by Vincent Lam. The eight part original series will air on HBO Canada.
Mann started his career starring with Jean-Claude Van Damme and the late Raul Julia in Universal’s Streetfighter, followed with the cult actioner Crying Freeman, directed by Christophe Gans (Silent Hill). He furthered his place in the action genre by starring with Billy Zane in Invincible, produced by Mel Gibson and Jet Li. The action in Invincible was directed by Tony Ching (Hero, House of Flying Daggers), and Mann again worked with Ching on Sony’s Belly of the Beast.
Intertwined with the action genre are noted dramatic turns in MGM’s Red Corner, starring opposite Richard Gere, and directed by Jon Avnet; New Line’s The Corruptor, opposite Chow Yun-Fat and Mark Wahlberg, directed by James Foley; Sony’s Sniper 3, opposite Tom Berenger; and James Cameron’s hit television series Dark Angel with Jessica Alba.
Mann’s recent works include the lead role in the Italian horror thriller The Counting House with Maggie Q (Mission: Impossible 3), a comedic turn with Kelly Hu (The Scorpion King) in Shanghai Kiss, headlining the award-winning drama Dragon Boys with Hong Kong superstar Eric Tsang (Infernal Affairs), and starring with Pamela Anderson and Denise Richards in Blonde and Blonder. Mann also starred in the independent film Motherland opposite legendary Hong Kong actor, Kenneth Tsang (The Replacement Killers), and the actioner, Dangerous Man, produced by Voltage Pictures.
Mann grew up in Hong Kong, and studied at the University of California, in Los Angeles, graduating magna cum laude in Philosophy. Today, he splits his time between North America and Hong Kong. He currently lives in Vancouver and Los Angeles.
